I did according to what most sites mention as to growing ginkgo from seeds.
After more than a month the ginkgo seeds in the kitchen towel, the seed crack open but there is no shoot or root coming out from it. Its been in this state for a few weeks. The crack width is as wide your seedlings after 10 days. Should i continue waiting or plant new ones. Any idea to the problem? Anyone?

Oh--I should mention that I did have the indoor seeds outside for a month or so, and brought one tray in when the squirrels started their rounds--and covered the other tray. The squirrels don't seem to like the ginkgo seeds, though.

There is no possible way my boyfriend would throw away my ginkgo seedlings--which are right now one leaf behind those in your photos. The reason is not just that he would never presume to toss something that isn't his, doubly so if something green were sticking out of it, but also that I have been dragging him over to the pots to ooh and ah at the tiny green babies at least every day. He's very tolerant! He sees the baby ginkgoes nourishing my heart.

I was mortified when I read your post that your husband threw your little green children out!

Squirrels have eaten most of my precious acorns that my daughter gave me, but, well, that's what squirrels do...I still was unhappy. But baby ginkgoes! ~gasp, sob~

Incidentally, I didn't know anything about scoring or soaking the seeds. I just stuck them in soft seedling soil and they're coming up fine. The ones in the house have sprouted, the outdoor ones aren't sprouting yet--it's still January. I have a grow lamp on the babies inside.

Thanks for your post!

those were pretty easy trees to grow, and you did make it past the hardest growing hurdle - unless you were going to bonzai - now theres a test for a tree grower/expert, so forgiveness for your husband should be easy. I'm assuming there was no stratification required. thanks for the bleach soaking info, i will be planting both gingkos, and kct this coming spring as well as a long list of others that i have collected, or purchased. do you have any info for angelica tree growing? any website advice for strat, scar would be appreciated.

Thanks for you Gingko story. While looking for colored Fall leaves around town - Somerset PA - I saw that the Gingko trees by the church west of the Post Office were dropping little pale orange cherries. I brought a few home and just this morning looked for information on growing them. Some said the seed pulp irritates skin, so I'll remove seeds carefully and read your planting notes. Thanks again Julie

You have inspired me to grow some Kentucky Coffee trees from seed this fall. I have a KY Coffee tree in my front yard, about 14 feet tall. It's beautiful. Mature trees have a great canopy. This tree never needs water and it's compound leaves are unique.

Enjoyed reading about your exploits.
