For Dogwood Fans Only

I was testing out some new gear today, taking lots of tree pictures in the pouring rain. I’m happy to report that my camera stayed dry as a 3-day-old croissant. Me, however — I needed a towel.

So, dogwood fans, can you guess what the white blotches are in the background of this picture?

  1. My white blotches arrived last Friday. To my dismay. Late to bloom - early to drop. *sigh*

  2. All the petals of the defrocked tree that now have to be raked up from the lawn….. (sigh)

  4. Hey Jules,

My older dogwood bloomed over 2 weeks ago, and still has all of its’ flowers. It’s late every year. I had assumed it was a “Kousa” variety because of this, but the tree guy from Dreyer took a look at it when planting the other one, and said it’s not, and probably a Cherokee Princess (and something about the shape of the Kousa leaves). So, I don’t know why it’s always so late. The leaves are outstanding though, particularly in late November. I hope my new one near the bay window looks as good then. It was full of flowers in late April-early May, at a more “dogwood socially appropriate” time. Unfortunately, it was at the nursery then, but at least I have it for next year.

BTW, the European Hornbeam that got moved to the backyard (and replaced by the dogwood) because it “looked funny” behind the October Glory, suddenly looks terrific in the backyard. So does the transplanted maple. The right spot makes a big difference sometimes :)

  5. Sorry…I’m late!

I’m guessing the white splotches are the newly fallen petals. Julie, you may find this report of use: Dogwood Manual
