The fall color palette is so warm and inviting. This is my royal red maple.

This tree is deep red in spring and brown all summer. Its fall color is usually quite dull. But this year, it has an inspiring bronze tint.

My dogwood is nearly bare. (In the background, a blue tarp over some Lego setup the boys made in the yard. Blue tarps are an unpleasant annoyance to photographers, akin to power lines, exit signs and trash cans.)

My October Glory red maple is still mostly green. Once it turns fully red, how long do you think it will hold its leaves?

Here’s my guess: once I post a blog post showing the tree fully red, I’ll bet the tree is in full color for 21 days before the majority of the leaves fall off. What’s your guess?

Leaves on my purple leaf plum stay the same color from spring through fall. (In the background: the huge red maple in my neighbor’s yard.)

There’s another shot of the purple leaf plum. This time, my October Glory red maple is in the background.

My sugar maple is a rich, deep yellow today. I love that tree’s fall color because it can be deep orange or yellow. Not sure what factors make it one color or the other from year-to-year.

So what’s the problem with fall? Leave a comment guessing my answer.

    That is doesn’t last :(

  2. The problem with fall? The colors are amazing, but they disappear SO quickly. Then you have to clean up the brown, wet mess…

I thought that blue in the background was Pennsylvania :)

I agree with Bill. Yesterday my dogwood had leaves. Today: all gone.

Heidi — jules here — LOL about the Pennsylvania comment!!!!!!! That’s so funny and now that you mention it, it DOES look like Pa! — jws

The problem with fall is just that. The leaves fall all too quickly.

Hey Bill — jules here — that’s pretty much what I was thinking too. Everything is so beautiful right now. But don’t blink or you’ll miss it. –jws

My guess for the October Glory at fully red: 12 days. I’m thinking a storm will come through.

Awww. We don’t get much color change here in Autumn. Besides the non-native grasses turning brown and umm. Oh! All that concrete! Ya! So pretty!

Can you tell I am jealous? lol.
