The Big 2009 Card Design Contest!

City of Nouns: Julie Walton Shaver Lifestyle Photography shaver front.08 The Big 2009 Card Design Contest!

This year’s card design contest is SO random! Read below for all the contest details.

Above, the front of my family’s New Year’s card featured Kaptain Karl on the cover of the magazine, “Karl’s Life.” The type says, “Photo shoot special! Kaptain Karl as Darth Kittius.” (He makes that face you know.) Then along the bottom are pictures of Bradley, Mike and Gregory. The small type says, “INSIDE: Kaptain Karl and 3 men take on the mamarazzi. Find out who wins the intergalactic battle.”

The inside revealed the conquering king, Kaptain Karl, along with some random pictures of the guys.

And finally, on the back, some pictures of my family, taken by my photo assistant, Gabriel Francobandiero. Thanks, Gabe!

2009 CONTEST DETAILS

I will begin posting the rest of my holiday card designs this week.

The winner will be chosen at random from all comments on the card designs. The more often you comment, the more times your name gets put in the hat!

THE BIG PRIZE: The winner will receive a $300 credit to be used in my online store. You could use your credit toward prints, wall canvasses or albums. Or, you could use your credit toward a 2009 photo session or as a session gift credit for a friend!

I will accept comment posts on each design for one week. Comments must be legitimate and unique. I reserve the right to delete any comments that seem repetitive, copied or insincere. One comment per legitimate e-mail address per day will be counted. If you comment on one card design, feel free to leave a response comment, but only one of your posts will be counted for each design.

NOTE: In the “name” field, you may list your initials, your first name, or a nickname. I will know who you are by your e-mail address.

  1. Tracy Lawrence says:

The blues and greens are pretty on the card. For some reason I’ve always been more attracted to Kinkade or Wyeth, homes and seasons but it’s pretty just not the card for me.

  2. Tracy Lawrence says:

Very clever and very cute face on the cat. How did you ever get him to stay like that? It’s a very nice card. Quite original!

  3. Kim says:

I am not so sure you have the right character… I think Karl must actually be a direct descendent of Yoda, not Darth! I mean, look at those ears and that smile! Thanks for the laugh – we have a pudgy cat that we rescued too and love him to death.

You may be right about Yoda — but he does have a Darth Sidius face he makes. This particular picture is a bit too, um, nice. Definitely more Yoda-ish. Thanks for the comment! — jws

  4. Mercy says:

  5. Jackie says:

Are the boys upset that Karl steals the show? I love the picture of him with the Santa hat and I am not even a “cat person”.

  6. Glory says:

Julie, your photography is amazing. Loved the card, especially the line “all hail the conquering king?”. I agree: The World changes, so does the history pages. One thing never changes; cats always rule.

  7. Stacey says:

Karl is cute. How old is he? Is he strickly an inside cat?

Hi Stacey — we think he’s around 8-ish, and yes, he’s an inside cat. He came to us from the shelter with no front claws. — jws

  8. Lynn Nickles says:

Julie, your photographs are quite lovely. We name our cats with “people” names, too. Sarah’s cat is Salley, Davis’ is Grayson, and Will’s is Thomas.

  9. Cathy says:

I am a cat lover thru & thru and your card is a keeper! You never cease to amaze me with your photos!

  10. Parka says:

Well, you should post your photos on Flickr as well, with a link back to your blog on every one of the photos. There are tons of people (aka traffic) there.

  11. Brad says:

Love the card. It’s amazing how animals and babies (human) steal the show.

  12. The Hausser Family says:

Great Card! Your cat has the cutest expressions! Keep up the awesome work!

Thanks! Hope to see you and the girls at choir tomorrow! :D — jws

  13. Steve G. says:

Love your New Year’s card, Jules!

  14. Mary says:

When I showed my kids your card, and told them Karl was Darth Kittius, they started singing the Vader theme (Da Da Da, Dum Da Da, Dum Da Da — OK, that’s the best I can convey it without musical notation).

That’s pretty good! I was singing it right along with you! — jws

  15. Newman HUh says:

    Hi, how old is Karl?

Hey Newman — jules here — we got him from the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter. That’s why the back of the card says “age unknown.” His previous owners left him in a cage in the backyard. And then they moved away. Jerks. The super nice shelter people thought he was around 5 years old when we got him about 3 years ago. So we think he’s around 8. — jws
