Inspired by my son, Bradley’s, participation in 30-Hour Famine this coming weekend, I’m going to spend 30 hours thinking about food and how blessed we are in the United States. Even when times are tough, most communities here, like in Metuchen, have places families can go to get free or discounted food. But in many poor countries, such things as local food banks and food stamps don’t exist. So, leave a comment and help me spread the word about donating to local food banks!
30 HOURS OF COMMENTS FOR CANS
All you need to do is post a comment in this thread. Tell me your favorite restaurant in Metuchen or Edison, or a favorite staple food item.
For every comment received between 6 a.m. Thursday and noon Friday, I’ll donate a can of food or a nonperishable food item to the food pantry at the First Presbyterian Church.

The legend of the dogwood involves blood and thorns....
Julie uses her blog to raise awareness about local food pantries and hunger....
Hello!
Very Interesting post! Thank you for such interesting resource!
PS: Sorry for my bad english, I’v just started to learn this language
See you!

awww!!! we did this last year! so awesome! let’s see we love sweet peas and spam. lol!
Hope I’m not too late, Julie!
I have to name two things because my first thought was organic dark chocolate. Just switched from milk chocolate in the last year or so and found that the dark satisfies my craving and doesn’t start a sugar binge. I can actually take one piece and stop there. LOL!
But then I started thinking you wanted “real” food so I’d say a good staple is couscous. It’s good alone or as a great base for a veggie dish and it’s FAST to make, a big consideration for busy people. Wish I had some that I could make now but I’m all out……
WOW! You guys are SO great! 56 comments in 30 hours. I’m heading to the grocery store right after school. List includes lots and lots of PASTA, by far the most commonly listed staple food item you all mentioned.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for helping to raise awareness of the need to keep local food pantries and food banks stocked.
Love you all!

P.S. My staple food is chocolate chip cookies.
This is great and I made it under the wire. I LOVE restaurants and enjoy Moghul or Spice Melange for Indian food, La Rosa for pizza, Jade Dynasty for WONDERFUL Chinese, and The Wingery for, umm, let’s see, oh yeah–wings.
Couldn’t live without cans of whole plum tomatoes and crushed tomatoes in the house. They are used for so many things.
Go, Jules!
Julie, this is so wonderful! I have to say the staple in my house is definitely a jar of pasta sauce and pasta. It’s perfect when I’m all out of ideas for dinner!
Your are wonderful, Julie! We always have some chicken broth & tortellini around to make soup, and ALL the boys love LaRosa’a pizza!
Pasta, pasta, pasta.
Our favorite Metuchen restaurant is Mr. Pi’s. We have our bag of foods for the pantry on the doorstep ready for the pickup tomorrow and we sponsored a couple kids, who came to our door last night for the 30 Hour Famine.
GREAT WORK, Julie! May God bless you. My food staple is popcorn; it is my dinner most evenings.
Don’t know the restaurants in your area, but I always have some stewed or crushed tomatoes in the cabinet. Heat them up and pour over pasta–nice healthy meal!
Have fun at the Famine, it was by far the best youth activity that I have attended, aside from Habitat. Favorite metuchen restaurant would have to be the Main Street Trattoria!
Julie! You rock! Rob and I stop at Tony’s Pizzeria at Tano Mall every time we are in NJ!
I think this is a fabulous idea, you go girl! My favorite food staple is junk food; that is a category right?
My fallback for cooking dinner is always rice. It goes with everything.
