My personal goal for Lent this year is to complete tangible projects that benefit my neighbors who need a helping hand.

Inspired by my son, Bradley’s, participation in 30-Hour Famine this coming weekend, I’m going to spend 30 hours thinking about food and how blessed we are in the United States. Even when times are tough, most communities here, like in Metuchen, have places families can go to get free or discounted food. But in many poor countries, such things as local food banks and food stamps don’t exist. So, leave a comment and help me spread the word about donating to local food banks!

30 HOURS OF COMMENTS FOR CANS
All you need to do is post a comment in this thread. Tell me your favorite restaurant in Metuchen or Edison, or a favorite staple food item.

For every comment received between 6 a.m. Thursday and noon Friday, I’ll donate a can of food or a nonperishable food item to the food pantry at the First Presbyterian Church.

If you’d like to sponsor my son, Bradley, we will both greatly appreciate it! Simply make your check out to “World Vision” and mark “30-Hour Famine-Bradley” in the memo field. The U.S. government will be matching donations again this year, so our money goes a long way towards helping to alleviate the problem of hunger in poor countries.

    Please send your donation to
    First Presbyterian Church
    270 Woodbridge Ave
    Metuchen, NJ 08840

    THANK YOU!

God bless you and your family for what you are doing! I don’t know how I’d get by without peanut butter and jelly in the house. When I’ve only got 5 minutes for lunch, nothing’s easier or faster than PB&J, glass of milk, and an apple to take on the go.

  2. Alisa says:

Cereal. We can’t do without it. It’s breakfast, a late night snack, dessert in pinch – love it. Favorites would be Cookie Crisp or Fruity Pebbles if I want something ‘junkie’, or Kashi GoLean or Special K if I’m feeling like a responsible adult when it comes to calorie intake.

  3. Fred says:

Favorite food? Love fowl (chicken, turkey, duck, goose, etc.) but for a staple food item it would have to be any type of bread. Am supporting my grandson who is participating in a 30 hour famine in his church this weekend.

  4. Jackie says:

    Pizza, LaRosa’s of course.

  5. Kate Harrison says:

The staples in our home are PB&J (always good with a glass of cold milk) & spaghetti & sauce – we never go wrong with those. As for my favorite restaurant in Metuchen-dare I say I have 2? The Trattoria (family fave) and Lola’s Bistro. Thanks for sharing, and passing along the gratitude!

  6. Mary C. says:

wonderful idea…never been to Metuchen or Edison, but here in Mechanicsville, VA my favorite restaurant is The Pasta House, and the family’s favorite staple is black bean soup!

  7. lisa lussier says:

wonderful idea Julie. Our staple is pasta. Yes we do all have many things to be grateful for.

Great effort Julie! My favorite meal any time is buffalo-style chicken salad.

Who can say no to cling peaches? They sound so friendly.

  11. Brenda says:

Peanut butter & jelly are staples in our home. Julie, I am so bummed that you can’t take pictures of this year’s 30 Hour Famine – I loved last year’s slide show (and the grandparents did too!).

  12. Carolina Girl says:

    My favorite restaurant…anywhere…is Chick-fil-A!!!! :o )

  13. Maggy Cook says:

I am making a sample run on the special “Break Fast” Dinner tonight – I couldn’t talk them into Stone Soup again – So the VERY BEST PLACE TO EAT IN METUCHEN (Saturday only) will be the Social Center around 6 Pm
Julie – you are the best!
    Love you
    Maggy

  14. Joni Scanlon says:

Julie, we can always count on Main St. Trattoria for a reliably good meal. Head chef our former neighbor and a great guy. Favorite food? That’s so hard to answer in “this” family. Great that you’re doing this!

  15. Kristine says:

Great effort, Julie. Radhana’s Thai restaurant has been a staple for our family for over ten years…
