I used to look at adorable photos of newborns and think: That looks easy. Truth is, it’s not always easy to hold a naked baby and make it look natural and unposed. I love how the photo above came out! Let’s just say Dad was not the most comfortable fellow holding a tiny newborn.

Here’s the other shot that isn’t as easy as it looks — the family portrait with a 2-year-old in the mix. So I just go with the flow and let it happen naturally. Whatever we get is what it is. And isn’t that the beauty of it? Life as it really is? (The family picture will work beautifully by the time everybody’s 4! Yay!)

Aren’t his eyes beautiful? He was just 2 weeks old in this shoot. Now he’s about 3 months. I can’t wait to see how much he’s grown!

And his big sister is so cute!

Love the pillow.

My wide angle lens makes this Manhattan apartment nursery look larger than it feels when you’re in there.

My little 2-year-old friend was playing the I-will-not-look-at-your-camera game. See the shot above? PURE LUCK.

Look how he’s holding on to mommy! Love this shot!

Isn’t he adorable?

I remember holding my sons like that when they were newborns. I could have sat for hours just admiring how beautiful they were.
Coming tomorrow to the blog: Dawn and Joe’s holiday card/newborn announcement card design. See that hat? It’s really a cool Christmassy hat! Check the blog tomorrow to see how I combined the pictures for their card.

See the Christmassy hat?

Funny thing about this one — it was badly underexposed in the original. Thank God for shooting raw images! I was able to save the shot with that adorable expression, and it made the front of the card, click here to see the fun Christmas card/newborn announcement card design!

Dawn’s mom is the baby’s nurse. I love this shot.

Love this one too! That’s Dawn’s dad.

This shot means a lot to me because that’s dad’s chair, where he spends a lot of time reading, checking business email and watching ESPN. So I love this shot of him playing with his daughter, and the empty “dad’s chair” in the foreground.

I love how they play together, taking advantage of every corner in the cool apartment.

Earlier in the day, mom, dad and I went to the park with their daughter.

Love this one with the big city building in the background.

That one’s cool too.

FAVE!

Cute!

I love her outfit!
Hope you loved your sweet slide show! I can’t wait to see how much the baby has grown at our next shoot!
From the Army/Navy Store to American Girl Place, this was a family session of contrasts....
One of my favorite things: hanging out with families when they're just hanging out....
Great shoot! You really captured some of the moments.
Great shots…What a lovely “day in the life” for this family!
LOVE this shoot…what adorable little ones and you did a spectacular job!!!!
I have only had one brief glimpse of baby Joseph since he was born so this slide show helped to fill that void. I was fortunate enough to get a Christmas card and enjoyed seeing his birth announce within…very clever! The natural settings you use capture the the best moments in life. They are a very photogenic family! Donna Lambdin
Thanks Donna! I loved that card too!
awwww, so adorable. I can barely remember my babies being that small. They are now riding bikes and reading and throwing tantrums!
I love the image of mom in the nursery – it is so peaceful and speaks of pure love. gasp – big sis is a cutie!!!
Julie you did it once again…..a terrific photo shoot of baby Joseph and family…..you have a special gift to capture the moments and make emotions come alive…..I am so fortunate to be able to watch my grandchildren grow up in front of your lens.
