I have never attended a graduation that was so entertaining as the Metuchen High School Graduation of 2010. Leave a comment or send me an email message if you’d like to see the slide show.

I loved how the students coordinated their speeches. Well done!

I love this image of the soprano and alto sections of the choral ensemble. Beautiful light in parts of that auditorium.

The day before graduation, we attempted to make a big “M10″ on the field. Do you know how hard it is to coordinate 159 high school seniors who are hot and bored? Because next time I try this, I’m going to need your help. Check out Dan in the bottom of my field of view. He was trying to get the students to jump for joy at being done with school. Too funny!

As you can see in this close up, we did manage a little whooping though!

Graduation rehearsal was very interesting. Love the sunglasses!

Love this shot of the class president demonstrating how to turn the (imaginary) tassle.

She’s going to school to be a photojournalist! Yay!

Before the graduation ceremony, I wandered the halls looking for interesting shots. And it occurred to me that in our high school, the students no longer have homerooms, but in the lineup for graduation, they’re, generally speaking, in their old homerooms from middle school. So in a few of the rooms, I managed to get a cool group shot of the old homeroom. Didn’t work out in every room though.

The high honor graduates and the president of the student council lined up for a group shot of their own. Congratulations! Students had to achieve a 4.0 average (or better) to make that high honor distinction.

I was very impressed.

The auditorium was so crowded that I could only manage to get pictures of the processional down one side of the aisle.

But the pictures I did manage to get came out great!

The problem with having graduation in that auditorium is that the only row you can see from the audience is the front one. So at one point during the program, I wandered backstage to get a few shots of some students in the rest of the class. The one above is my favorite!

Love how colorful the pictures came out!

That’s a very challenging graduation to shoot because there’s really no light on the graduates faces as they approach the board member handing them their diplomas. One of the reasons I wanted to shoot this graduation even though I didn’t have a child graduating this year was to get practice for when my own kids are up there. I think in the future I might consider asking for a little space to set up an off-camera flash. The good news is that I think I might have managed to get a decent shot of each graduate at some point walking across the stage. Because of the light issue, I tried to get the shot when their face was in the most light. Using an on-camera flash would have resulted in pictures that wouldn’t capture the ambient light very well.

Love this one in the hallway just before the processional!

I wonder if my high school class decorated cars for graduation. Hmm, can’t remember.

I love their senior shirts. “Done. June 22, 2010.” Except the front doesn’t say “seniors”; it says “SEN10RS.”

What was the actual theme of the Graduation. The pictures are so beautiful. I am chairing 5th grade and know I need a new camera.
Thanks,
Joanna
Hey Joanna, sorry for the delay in responding. The theme of the student speeches centered around Bagel Pantry. It was hilarious! Canon makes excellent point-and-shoot cameras if that’s the sort you’re looking for. For cameras with interchangeable lenses (DSLR), I love my Nikons!
What a blessing to have these incredible pics to remember their special day. Thank you so much!
Julie – The slide show is a treasure!
Thank you for sharing your creative talent and humor with our wonderful community. You’ve captured the largest, the smallest, and the most important moments of the 2010 MHS graduation.
May I offer you a BP bagel of YOUR choice as a gesture of thanks for posting your work?
Beautiful, Julie. There are tears in my eyes now.
