I met several families at the Metuchen pool the other day. We had so much fun passing the little underwater point-and-shoot around! It’s a Canon Powershot D10 and I highly recommend it as long as you are willing to do some post-processing to downplay some of the wild shifts in color balance. So if you were you there and your group borrowed the camera for a while, click here to check out the fun pictures. And THANKS, Metuchen Matters, for posting the story on your wall! Awesome!

All the underwater pictures in this post were taken with my Canon Powershot D10. Most of the above-water pictures were taken with my Nikon D3 and my 135mm f/2 lens, just so there’s no confusion. There’s one shot in the post, though, that’s sort of an underwater/above-water hybrid.

Just one long shot to give you a sense of how big this pool is, in case you’re not from the area. It’s a really nice pool! Click here for yesterday’s post with lots of fun pool pictures of Brad of Grex.

I think the kids were having fun taking jump shots!

Canonball!

Wow! I didn’t get up the nerve to dive off the diving board until I was at least 15. I’m kind of chicken like that.

They were all diving!

I had friends all over the pool though — some in the shallow end too.

Hi-YA! (Bravely getting ready to jump in.)

He’s so confident in the water.

And HE’S a pro at underwater self-portraits! (He mastered my underwater camera last summer on our trip to Vermont, which I still haven’t blogged about yet. But I’m getting to that, I promise!)

He’ll be diving off the diving board like his big brother in the blink of an eye.

Because LOOK how awesome he is at jumping! Woo hoo!

There’s his big brother…

Love these shots!

I also loved the fact that he was being really cool about me taking pictures of him, and I was being really subtle about it in front of his friends. After he came up from the deep water after the dive, he walked quietly by me and said, “Did you get it?” I love that! GREAT job on the dive! You look awesome!

The great thing about the underwater camera is that kids love taking underwater pictures and having fun with the camera. The above-water pictures of kids looking at the pictures they took are just as fun as the underwater ones. (Wait till you see the Vermont ones of the kids playing with their dad! I love those! The camera was SO worth the price!)

I was thinking this shot was leading into the next one, but the pink goggles are not in the right place and the girl in the blue goggles is actually the one TAKING the next picture. Hmm…

… Love it anyway!

I HAVE to go back to the pool with that camera. They all had so much fun!

One little problem with the camera — it has a tendency for WILD shifts in white balance. Some pictures come out really blue and some come out so red that the people look terribly sun-burned when they’re not.

Here’s my shooting advice for underwater pictures: shoot so that the sun is on the subject’s face if you can. You get more consistent color results.

I called another one of my friends over and handed him the camera but I didn’t know any of the guys he was hanging out with. I loved the pictures once I got home and looked at them on my computer.

Those guys were having fun with the camera too!

Love this one!

This one too! By the way, did you know that in Japan if you hold a camera up to take a Japanese person’s picture, and they notice you, they will almost always make a peace sign. Not sure if it’s an actual “peace” sign to them though. Might be more of a “thanks” sign or “hello!”

I love the expressions you get on kids’ faces with this camera! Awesome!

Another cool thing about the underwater camera — results can be really fun and creative too! I have no idea who gets credit for this awesome shot. Whoever took it, if you’re reading, AWESOME job!

How is it that some people can have their mouth open under water? I have to pinch mine shut.

See what I mean about the white balance? His hair is actually mostly blonde, not red. Something happens in the water mixed with light that does that in certain angles. I took a lot of the red away in photoshop, so what you see here is about 4 passes after “get the red out.”
That’s it for this round of underwater fun at the Metuchen pool. Click here for yesterday’s post with lots of underwater and slide pictures too! And remember — if you see me at the pool handing my camera around — ask to borrow it and I’ll post my faves of your underwater shots on the blog! Oh summer, how I adore you.
Check out our underwater pictures at the Metuchen pool!...
Another beautiful summer day results in lots more fun pictures at the Metuchen pool....
Grex was so excited to share the awesome Metuchen pool with his 'cousins.'...
I can’t tell you how amazing it is to have pictures of my kids with the kids of my oldest friend. We spent entire summers at the Metuchen Pool together, and I’d be surprised if we have one picture of the 2 of us there! These photographs capture a childhood summer perfectly.
Julie,
thanks so much for posting the pictures- they are really fun! Great summer memories!

What beautiful pictures. They really capture summer fun at the municipal pool. Thanks so much for sharing these!
What fun! (And brave of you to pass around your camera like that!)
