We didn’t plan it this way, but this family session turned out to be all about sports the kids are involved in — baseball, ice hockey, lacrosse, with some backyard swinging and biking thrown in just for fun.
See below for more images from their family lifestyle photo shoot. Send me a message or leave a comment if you’d like to see their slide show.

SAFE! Our first sport was baseball.

Next was lacrosse.

And finally, ice hockey.

I love this shot of Jack running through 1st base.

So many great opportunities for action shots at this shoot!

I was even able to get action shots of the kids’ friends.

Love this one.

This one too.

He’s the boys’ cousin.

And these are my main photo subjects for the day. Hi guys!

I had never been to a lacrosse game before. It’s a lot like soccer or hockey except there’s a lot of fighting in the dirt for the ball. I love this action shot.

I don’t really know the rules of the game, but scooping up the ball is the goal here.

And sometimes there’s an all-out war to get the ball. At one point during the game, the ref stopped everybody and gave a little tip: “When the ball is loose and there’s a mob scene fighting for it, hang back, come in low and scoop the ball up without anybody ever seeing you coming.” Uh, ok, sure.

I love this picture because Chris and Vanessa are diligently watching their sons in the game from the sidelines.

Immediately after the lacrosse game, we went to the twins’ ice hockey practice at the Armory in Red Bank. What a cool place to shoot! I loved the windows, the light and the bricks!

I was impressed with the skating skills of the twins, who are in kindergarten this year.

They wore alternating red and white leggings so it would be easier for me to tell them apart from the other members of the red team.

The hardest part about editing a photo shoot like this is trying to make sure each boy got a reasonably equal number of action shots. I made a grid to double check. So you think being a photographer is easy? It’s not!

I was shooting this game through the plexiglass along the sides of the rink. They came out pretty good!

After all the sports were over, we went back home… for more sports in the yard!

And a few family shots.

And then the boys wanted to get shots of them riding their bikes, but mom and dad had dinner plans and we didn’t have much time left.

Several weeks later, I was able to go to Jack’s hockey game, which was also at the Armory’s ice rink in Red Bank.

This time, the game was on the “big ice,” which has more places for spectators to move around.

It was a fun game to watch, and our team, the Red Bank Generals, won 3-2. Go team!

Those windows make this a very interesting ice rink to shoot in.

There’s also a great balcony to shoot from. (In this shot, I was shooting through the plexiglass though.)

Jack is number 21. He’s a great skater! Fearless!

After an assist for a score, the coach patted Jack on the head. Way to go, Jack!

I got some nice action shots of some of Jack’s teammates too.

Go Generals! I hope I can come down to see some more games. Shooting ice hockey games is fun!
Sometimes I wish I could go back in time, be a fly on the wall, when I was little....
It may rain tomorrow, but today, it's a beautiful day. Time to do nothing but play....
From football to Christmas cookies: a family shoot that makes me want sugar cookies!...
Very nice, the photos are simply spectacular. Love the shots that shows action an d look at those facial expressions, lol.
It made me cry too, Vanessa! So beautiful! And Julie, my son played hockey at the Armory for years. Besides the times when the sun is coming in the windows, it is the BEST rink in New Jersey for taking pictures. The view from the balcony is great – but their glass is second to none. It’s very difficult to take pictures through the glass at most rinks – it’s usually all marked up!
And lacrosse is really ice hockey on grass – the reason so many kids play both those sports. Since I only have a few more years with my son playing lacrosse, I’m looking forward to watching these three over the next 10-12 years!
Me too, Betsy! In so many ways it seems like yesterday that my sons were little. The time goes by so fast.
You are the best. The boys watched the slide show over breakfast with me crying the whole way through. You are right the Armory is a neat backdrop. As always thank you for capturing our life.
